A fabric with a fine soft nap that looks like real suede, but is lighter, cheaper and washable. Here is how to work with it.

It is a fabric of very fine synthetic fibres, microfibre, mostly polyester. The surface is sanded and gets a short velvety nap like real suede.
It comes on a woven base, dense and stable, or on a knit base that stretches a little. Heavier faux suede on a bonded base goes into jackets and upholstery.
Pros: cheaper and lighter than real suede, not afraid of water, washable, needs no special care, and the edges do not fray.
Cons: breathes less than natural fabrics, can build static, shows pin marks and creases if left folded for long.
Skirts, pinafores, jackets, shirt jackets and light coats. Knit-backed suede suits fitted garments.
Also bags, pouches, cushions and covers. A 5-metre piece is enough for several things or one large project.
The nap has a direction, so all pieces are cut the same way, or they will look like different shades. Pin only in the seam allowances, or better use clips: holes can stay.
Sew with a fine needle and a longer stitch, about 3 mm. If the fabric sticks to the foot, a Teflon or walking foot helps.
Wash at 30 °C on a gentle cycle without a hard spin. Dry flat or on a hanger.
Iron only on the wrong side, through a cloth, at a low setting and without steam. Brush the nap with a soft brush after washing.
